Threaded Y strainer (wye strainer)

A threaded Y strainer with a cast 316 body and a 316 screen, rated 800 WOG. Ten sizes from 1/4″ to 3″, every one with a blow-off plug so the line can be purged without opening the cap.

Product overview

The screen does the work.

A Y strainer sits in the line and catches what the pipe carries — scale, rust, weld spatter, jointing compound — before that debris reaches the equipment downstream. The screen does the work; the Y-shaped body simply holds it at an angle so flow passes through with little resistance and the solids drop into the leg.

This is the threaded version, cast in 316 stainless in our own foundry. Ten sizes are made: 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″, 1-1/4″, 1-1/2″, 2″, 2-1/2″ and 3″. Body, bonnet and blow-off plug are all ASTM A351 CF8M — the cast form of 316. Gasket and O-ring are PTFE. Working range is −20°C to 180°C at 800 WOG.

Screens are 316 stainless in three mesh counts. Twenty mesh is the general-purpose screen and the one we ship unless you say otherwise; 60 mesh catches finer sediment ahead of meters and nozzles; 100 mesh is for instrument and control valve protection. All three are stocked.

The blow-off plug at the bottom of the leg is standard on every size. Loosen it and line pressure pushes the collected debris out — no need to shut down, drain and open the cap for routine purging.

Install with the screen leg pointing downward on horizontal lines, or pointing down-flow on vertical lines. If the leg points up, collected debris falls back into the flow every time the line stops.

Applications

Where it gets used

Pump protection — fitted on the suction side, the screen keeps scale and grit out of the impeller and the seal faces.Flow meters and control valves — these are the parts that fail first when debris gets through, so a strainer upstream is standard practice.Spray nozzles — nozzle orifices block with particles far smaller than the pipe will pass. This is where the 100 mesh screen earns its place.Low-pressure steam and condensate — ahead of steam traps, within the −20°C to 180°C range of this strainer.Water treatment and cooling water — cooling tower and process water carry leaves, insects and pipe debris that foul heat exchangers.
Quality assurance

Every valve leak tested.

Each unit is checked for leakage before shipment.

FAQ
Which mesh should I choose?

20 mesh is the general-purpose screen and what we ship unless you specify otherwise. Go to 60 mesh ahead of flow meters and nozzles, and 100 mesh ahead of control valves and instruments. All three are stocked in 316.

Can I clean the screen without taking the strainer out of the line?

Yes. Loosen the blow-off plug at the bottom of the leg and line pressure pushes the debris out. For a full clean the cap unscrews and the screen lifts out, with the body left in the pipe.

What thread do you supply?

PT (taper) female threads from stock. NPT and PF are made to order.

Is 800 WOG a steam rating?

No. WOG means water, oil and gas, and it is a cold rating. For hot service what matters is the temperature range, which is −20°C to 180°C on this strainer.

Do you make 304 bodies?

CF8M (cast 316) is what we stock. CF8 (cast 304) is made to order.
